Inorganic Phosphate and Enhanced Glucose Degradation by the Intact Erythrocyte.

چکیده
Factors affecting the rate of glucose utilization by the intact mammalian erythrocyte have been the subject of several recent reports (l-3). The role of inorganic phosphate in the stimulation of erythrocyte glucose utilization (4) was examined by Rose, Warms, and O’Connell (2). The ability of Pi to moderate the effectiveness of glucose 6phosphate as an inhibitor of hexokinase was demonstrated by these workers. We have examined further the nature of the Pi-induced stimulation of glucose utilization by the intact erythrocyte. It was previously noted (3) that enhanced glucose utilization induced by Pi was accompanied by a characteristic deficiency of lact, ate production by the cells. The results of further examination of this effect of Pi on erythrocyte glucolysisi will be summarized in the present report. Evidence will be presented implicating the enzyme, phosphofructokinase, as a primary site of Pi activation (5, 6), leading to enhanced glucose utilization by the intact erythrocyte.

INHIBITION OF HUMAN ERYTHROCYTE GLUCOSE 6-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE ACTIVITY BY DEHYDROEPIANDROSTERONE AND RELATED STEROIDS.
The inhibitory effects of several steroids on G6PD activity using intact erythrocytes are reported. Incubation of whole blood with dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) resulted in 42% and 12% inhibition in the enzyme activity in the presence and absence of oxygen, respectively. Addition of epinephrine and/or aminophylline into the incubation medium caused further enzyme inhibition suggesting a po...

Characterization of starch breakdown in the intact spinach chloroplast.
Starch degradation with a rate of 1 to 2 microgram-atom carbon per milligram chlorophyll per hour was monitored in the isolated intact spinach (Spinacia oleracea) chloroplast which had been preloaded with (14)C-starch photosynthetically from (14)CO(2). Starch breakdown was dependent upon inorganic phosphate and the (14)C-labeled intermediates formed were principally those of the Embden-Meyerhof...
متن کاملTHE FORMATION OF GLUCOSE-l-PHOSPHORIC ACID IN EXTRACTS OF MAMMALIAN TISSUES AND OF YEAST
The initial stages of fermentation of glycogen to lactic acid in muscle have been investigated only recently. It was shown (1, 2) that the glycolytic reactions are initiated by the formation of glucose-l-phosphoric acid from glycogen and inorganic phosphate, an enzymatic process in which adenylic acid acts as coenzyme. The glucose-l-phosphoric acid (l-ester) is converted to glucose-6phosphoric ...
متن کاملOptimizing the production of Polyphosphate from Acinetobacter towneri
Inorganic polyphosphates (PolyP) are linear polymers of few to several hundred orthophosphate residues, linked by energy-rich phosphoanhydride bonds. Four isolates had been screened from soil sample. By MALDI-TOF analysis, they were identified as Bacillius cereus, Acinetobacter towneri, B. megaterium and B. cereus. The production of PolyP in four isolates was studied in phosph...
